How do you start your morning to make your day and keep up energised for work and your personal life? Some people will start their day with a cup of coffee, whereas others will start their day with tea. As a coffee and tea lover, sometimes I start my day with a soy flat white, while other days I start with tea to get me through the rest of the day. Tea has a strong but gentle power to boost energy and keep calm, whilst maintaining focus. Coffee does the same job of boosting energy to keep you awake, but it is not good a source of calmness which in turn can negatively impact concentration and alertness toward the work or things that require your focus. Tea will shift your energy to be more relaxed, flexible, and productive.
The health benefits of drinking tea in the morning
For some people, an hour's worth of productivity in the morning may be worth two hours at night. Sometimes what can be done in the morning can take extra effort at night. Morning is often always the best and most important time to set the tone for the day. Begin the day with a calm, relaxed, and grateful attitude so that the rest of your day is productive. Detoxing in the morning can help cleanse the body to be ready to consume nutrition throughout the day. Sickness and disease can build through stress, negativity, and an unhealthy lifestyle. Good health can be promoted when there is a consistent level of calmness, gratitude and a fitness lifestyle.
For as long as 2000 years ago, tea has been considered the art of balancing as it has healing magic for the mind and body. While it can have a significant impact on providing a positive mindset and grateful attitude, it also has natural chemicals that benefit brain health, heart health, and gut health. Benefits include improved cognitive performance, reduced risk of chronic disease, weight loss, improved immune system, anti-aging, and so much more. Having at least one cup of tea in the morning will make an incredible change in your life.
What will be the best type of tea to have morning?
It is a personal preference and depends on your personal health circumstance. I always love to start my day with a cup of Lapsang Souchong black tea or Wuyi Mountain rock/cliff oolong tea (Dahongpao) as part of my morning routine. Sometimes Chai is a good option to relax and warm up in the morning. If I consumed too much fatty food from the night before such as BBQ or pan-fried dishes then I would love a cup of green tea or purer tea in the morning. If your stomach is upset, or acidic, or you are experiencing bloating symptoms, then I would suggest starting with a cup of warm black tea or dark tea with a few thin slices of ginger, to ease the symptoms and calm the gut. The 80's Tea will stock herbal teas soon which will be great for the morning.
How to brew the perfect cup of tea for your morning routine?
During weekday mornings there is not much time available for a proper Gongfu tea brewing (Gongfu tea ceremony). I always love it at night after work or weekend when there is more time to relax. However, the simple way of brewing a perfect cup of tea will take you less than 10 minutes. Spend that 10 minutes to calm down and relax. In return, you will receive a treasure in the form of a great day ahead.
- Step 1: Boil the water to 100 degrees.
- Step 2: Warm up the vessels. This is the first important step to imbue the aroma and taste of tea.
- Step 3: Add the tea leaves. At the80stea, our black tea and Oolong tea are prepacked to a good amount for steeping. If you are using loose tea leaves without prepackaging, Use 5-8 grams of tea depending on the type of tea.
- Step 4: Rinse the leaves. Add boiling water from the edge of the teapot to the same level of tea leaves, then pour out the water. This step must not be skipped. The boiling water washes out the dust off the leaves and wakes up the leaves after a long journey from the mountain. It also activates its aroma and natural chemicals from a deep sleep and opens up the leaves.
- Step 5: Steeping and Decanting. Add around 200ml of boiling water from the edge of the teapot and steep for about 8-10 seconds and decant the tea into a warm cup to enjoy.
A good amount of tea leaves can be re-steeped 5-8 times or even more depending on the type of tea and its grade. Some top grades of tea can be re-brewed more than 10 times.
What is the common mistakes to avoid when drinking tea in the morning?
- Do not use lukewarm water - The water temperature is key when promoting the health benefit of tea. Use boiling water to wash off the dust, kill microorganisms, and activate its beneficial natural chemicals.
- Do not drink overnight tea - There are modern ways of cold brewing teas which involve leaving them in the fridge overnight to enhance the flavour or create iced tea. This is highly not recommended by Chinese herbalists from a health perspective. It can lead to an upset stomach, increased acid, diarrhea and other digestive issues.
- Do not let the tea cool down - Cold tea will increase stomach aches, acid, bloating and digestive issues. You might not notice any issues at the beginning but they will materialise from time to time.
- Do not consume tea on an empty stomach - Drinking tea with an empty stomach will increase your chances of getting tea drunk, getting an upset stomach, and other digestive issues.
